Hello everyone! Heyo! Welcome back to Scattering Flowers with Elise and Miles, a podcast where you read the daily Gospels and the Saint of the Day.
Let’s get started! Today is Wednesday, September 9th, and the scripture trifecta is Matthew 5:1.
When Jesus saw the crowds, he went up on the mountain.
After he was seated, his disciples gathered around him.
In today’s Gospel reading, Jesus makes us think deeper about our faith and serving others.
I reread the verses and wrote them as an easier way to remember them.
Know you need God.
Mourn what’s lost or wrong.
Be humble.
Be hungry for the right things and being right with God.
Be merciful.
Be honest about yourself.
Make peace, and your reward will be great.
The Beatitudes teach that faith is more than what you say.
This is how you treat others, and it’s a feeling inside of you.
Be poor in spirit.
Be humble.
Be hungry for the right things.
Be willing to stand up for Christ even when it might be hard to.
Today’s saint of the day is Saint Peter Claver.
He was born 1580 and died 1654.
He is the patron saint of African missions.
Peter Claver was a Spanish Jesuit.
He was sent to Cartagena in South America, where he spent 40 years in this great slave market of West Indies, laboring for the salvation of African slaves.
He Consecrated himself by vow to the service of those slaves.
He was their apostle, father, physician, and friend.
When news arrived of a slave ship coming into port, Peter would go on board at once and bring comfort into his dear slaves.
He fed and clothed them and nursed them with the greatest tenderness in their ugly diseases.
It is said that he baptized forty thousand slaves before he went to the reward in 1654.
Peter would say, We must speak to them with our hands by giving before we try to speak to them with our lips.
He organized societies among the Spanish people in Cartagena, just as Saint Vincent de Paul did in Paris.
