Let’s get started.
Today is Monday, August 31st, and the scripture to reflect on is Psalms 119:97.
Oh, how I love your law! It is my meditation all the day.
Did you have a good summer?
I did, and now we’re back in the school grind.
I had a lot of memories that we made this summer.
We did a lot of outdoor recreational things, and I got a pretty good tan.
I even have a watch mark on my arm, because when you’re outside, you soak up all the sun, right?
Today’s psalm kind of makes me think about soaking up the sun.
Imagine David writing his psalms in song to God, soaking it all up and, like, thinking on it, pondering it, perhaps even taking notes and discussing it with whoever will listen.
I do read my Bible regularly, but I sometimes act as if it’s more of a chore than a delight, especially when it comes to reading some of the Old Testament books.
But even Jesus read scriptures, like in today’s Gospel reading.
Scripture helps us fight against evil.
We can get closer to God when we take time to read His Word and study the deeper parts of the Bible.
Anybody can learn from God’s Word.
Today’s saints of the day are Saint Joseph of Arimathea and Saint Nicodemus.
They are from the first century.
They are the patron saint of funeral directors.
Saint Joseph of Arimathea was a respected, wealthy leader who has become a disciple of Jesus.
Following the death of Jesus, Joseph took Jesus’s body from Pilate, wrapped it in fine linen, and buried it.
He had a lot of courage.
According to some legends, Joseph was punished and imprisoned for such a bold act.
Nicodemus was a Pharisee and like Joseph, an important first-century law.
We know from John’s Gospel that Nicodemus went to Jesus at night secretly to understand his teachings about the kingdom.
Later, he spoke up for Jesus at the first time of his arrest and arrested in Jesus’s betrayal.
We know little else about Nicodemus.

In the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit.
Dear God, help us to find time in our day to read the Bible and listen to Your Word, and help us to have courage like Saint Joseph of Arimathea and Saint Nicodemus.
Saint Joseph of Arimathea and Saint Nicodemus, pray for us.
