Hello everyone.
Heyo.
Welcome back to Scattering Flowers with Elise and Miles, a podcast where you read the daily gospels and the saint of the day.
Let’s get started.
Today is Wednesday, July 1st, and for the summer weeks, we are going to do the ABCs of our Catholic faith and saints.
Today is the letter R for relic, and the scripture to reflect on is Acts 19, 11 through 12.
And God did extraordinary miracles by the hands of Paul, so that handkerchiefs or aprons were carried away from his body to the sick, and diseases left them, and the evil spirits came out of them.
A relic is anything that helps us remember and feel closer to one of the saints.
They are like a reminder or keepsake.
It can be something as simple as a rosary, a piece of cloth, but it can also be a part of the saint’s body, only after the saint has died.
When a person becomes a saint, they have already passed from their earthly life.
Any physical things remain.
Today’s saint of the day is our Saint Rose of Lima.
Today, saint of the day is our Saint Rose of Lima.
She was born 1582 and died 1617.
She is the patron saint of Peru.
Rose was born in Peru, South America.
She was very obedient to her parents.
She did all tasks with a happy smile.
She always tried to do little things, but they were pleasing to others.
Rose was very pretty.
Her mother wanted her to wear beautiful clothes, but Rose would say, Mother, only beauty of the soul is worthwhile.
A rich young man wanted to marry Rose.
He offered her a large home and many servants, but she refused.
She only wanted to love and serve God.
When her parents had lost money, Rose went out every day to work and at night did sewing to help her parents.
Rose visited the homes of the poor and brought them food.
She offered them all many sufferings and good works to God for sinners.
Our Lord often appeared to her like little child to tell her how he has pleased with her kind deeds.
There are three classes of relics.
The first class is a part of the saint’s body, like a bone or piece of hair.
The second class is something that belonged to a saint.
The third class is something touched by the saint, like a piece of cloth.
A relic is a treasure that brings us closer to the saints and our Catholic faith.
Saint Rose wore a heavy silver crown that reminded her of Jesus' crown of thorns.
She prayed constantly and went to church to adore Jesus every day and constantly refused to be married.
Insisting that physical beauty wasn’t as important as holiness, she devoted her whole life in prayer knowing that beauty fades but God’s eternal.
Rose died in 1617 when she was only 31 years of age.
She’s the first saint of the Americans.
Let’s pray.
In the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
Dear God, thank you for helping us get closer to the saints.
We love you.
And thank you for the beauty you have created.
Saint Rose of Luma, pray for us.
Amen.
In the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
Amen.
Thank you so much for listening.
We’ll be back tomorrow scattering more flowers.
See ya!
