Hello everyone! Heyo! Welcome back to Scattering Flowers with Elise and Miles, a podcast where you read the daily Gospels and the Saint of the Day.
Let’s get started! Today is Friday, June 5th, and the Gospel reading is Mark 12, 35-37, and the scripture to reflect on is Mark 12, 36.
David himself, inspired by the Holy Spirit, declared the Lord, said to my Lord, sit at my right hand till I put your enemies under your feet.
Here’s a brain teaser for you.
You have a basket with five apples, and you take away three.
How many do you have now?
The answer is that you have three apples, because those are the ones that you took.
Here’s another one.
If three cats can catch three mice in three minutes, how long will it take a hundred cats to catch a hundred mice?
The answer is three minutes.
Each cat catches one mouse in three minutes.
The religious teachers of the day expected the Messiah, the Savior, to be an earthly king from the family line of King David, because the Messiah would come from David’s family.
People thought of him simply as David’s son, but Jesus gives them a brain teaser to get them to think.
He quotes a psalm and then asks, if the Messiah is David’s son, why does David call the Messiah his Lord?
This upcoming Sunday is the Feast of Corpus Christi, also known as the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ.
This feast celebrates the gift of the Eucharist in our lives and in the Church.
In Latin, Corpus Christi means Body of Christ.
Remember back to Easter during Holy Thursday.
Remember the institution of the priesthood and the Eucharist, the Last Supper, the agony in the garden, and the betrayal of Judas in the beginning of the Passion of Christ.
So many things to remember.
Corpus Christi Sundays allows us to focus purposely on celebrating the real presence of Christ, Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity in the Bread and Wine.
The origins of the Feast of Corpus Christi date back to the Middle Ages.
During the 13th century, a Belgian nun named Sister Juliana had a great devotion to the Eucharist.
Through visions, our Lord told her to establish a feast dedicated to the Blessed Sacrament.
Through the influence of Sister Juliana, the importance of spreading devotion to the Blessed Sacrament reached the future of Pope Urban IV.
Sister Juliana died 1258 and is now recognized as a saint.
A great king like David would never bow to his own son.
Jesus is explaining a secret about who he really is.
He is both human and God.
Because Mary is his mother, Jesus really is a son of David.
And he is the Lord, which makes him David’s Savior.
A way you could celebrate this special feast day is by participating in a Eucharist procession.
If there is no procession at a nearby parish, going to Mass and adoration are excellent ways to celebrate on this day.
Never forget Jesus in the Eucharist.
When we receive communion, Christ is closer to us than ever.
We should never take this gift for granted.
Let’s pray.
In the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
Dear God, thank you for being our Savior and for challenging us to think deeper as we read your word.
And thank you that you gave us your body and blood, soul and divinity.
Amen.
In the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
Amen.
Thank you so much for listening.
We’ll be back next week with a summer podcast series surprise.
See ya!
