Hello everyone! Heyo! Welcome back to Scattering Flowers with Elise and Miles, a podcast where we read the daily Gospels and the Saint of the Day.

Let’s get started! Today is Monday, May 5th, and the Gospel reading is John 14, 27-31, and the scripture to reflect on is John 14, 27.

Peace I leave with you.

My peace I give to you.

Not as the word gives do I give it to you.

Do not let your hearts be troubled or afraid.

The peace that Jesus talks about here is much more than a restful, quiet feeling.

It’s the peace deep in your soul that can calm fears, soothe hurts, and remove troubles.

This kind of peace doesn’t come from anything special, do or say.

It can only come from God.

Sure, you might have troubles and problems in your lifetime, but that will make you feel unpeaceful for a while.

But when you have Christ’s peace, you can get through difficult times.

Today’s Saint of the Day is Saint Florian.

He was born 250 and died 304.

He is a patron saint of firefighters in Poland.

Florian lived near the town of Innis, which is now Austria.

He enlisted in the Roman army and soon became an officer and civil administrator.

During the reign of Emperor Diocesan, Florian refused to carry out orders to persecute Christians.

Choosing not to remain silent about his faith, Florian voluntarily presented himself as a Christian to the soldiers of the Roman governor, Aquinas.

Florian was originally sentenced to death by burning at the stake, standing on the pyre, but it was said that he was challenged to the Roman soldiers to light the fire, saying, if you do, I will climb to the heaven of the flames and throw him into the river with a stone around his neck.

He is said to have been martyred not far from the spot of Innis River flows into many miracles, particularly regaining protection from fire that were abandoned to Florian’s intercession.

Florian was martyred not far from the spot where Innis River flows in Danube.

Jesus didn’t just give his peace to his disciples.

We receive his peace when we receive Jesus himself in the Eucharist, in a reconciliation, and in confirmation, and all the sacraments that he has given to us.

Florian’s life is a reminder that our submission to earthly authority must be tempered and informed by our faith.

Service to God take precedence in Florian’s life.

He realized that he owned his loyalty to God before all else.

Let’s pray.

In the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit.

Dear Jesus, in difficult moments, please fill me with your peace.

And help me to inspire me to serve you before all else.

St.

Florian, pray for us.

Amen.

In the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit.

Amen.

Thank you so much for listening.

We’ll be back tomorrow scattering more flowers.

See ya! Thank you!
