Hello everyone! Heyo! Welcome back to Scattering Flowers with Elise and Miles, a podcast where we read the Daily Gospels and the Saint of the Day.
Let’s get started!Today is Tuesday, April 28th, and the Gospel reading is John 10, 22-30, and the scripture to reflect on is John 10, 27.
My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.After today’s Gospel reading, I made up an acrostic poem.
T.
Talk to God daily.
R.
Rely on Him.
U.
Understand all that He teaches.
S.
Support when we need help and guidance.
And T.
Truth and love.
Sometimes it is challenging to know who or what we can trust.
We are followers, sheep, of Jesus, and we obey God.
We recognize His voice by reading the Bible, praying, and focusing on Him.
In the Gospel today, Jesus talked about recognizing His voice.
We know that the promises Jesus made were not just for the Bible, but for our lives, too.
He promises to provide blessing and strength if we follow Him.
Today’s Saint of the Day is St.
Peter Chanel.
He was born 1803 and died 1841.
He is the patron saint of Oceania.
As a boy, Peter was a shepherd on his family’s farm near Belay, France.
His religious devotion impressed the parish priest who helped Peter get a good education.
He entered the seminary and was ordained in 1827 and began ministering in the parish.
Peter likes to read letters that French ministers sent home, which stirred his own missionary vocation.
He joined the Marists, hoping to send overseas, but was first assigned to teach at a seminary.
After five years, his dream came true and he led a band of Marists to Oceania.
He started working on an island of Futuna, and with little success, he didn’t know the language and had to adapt to an unfamiliar way of life.
Yet, he preserved.
The local chief strongly opposed Christianity, became irritated when his son asked to be baptized.
The chief sent a band of men to kill Peter by clubbing him to death, but within a year or so after his martyrism, the people accepted the faith and the church grew greatly.
How do we recognize God’s voice?
By being familiar with who Jesus is and what he says.
We read the Bible, we pray and ask for understanding and wisdom.
We think about things that are true and lovely and holy, and we rest with the guidance and peace of God.
Peter was encouraged by a priest who saw his potential.
How many people have gone to great things in life because someone believed in them?
In our daily lives, we can overlook the good points of others, but if we try to notice our talents and draw them out, we can encourage others to grow.
Let’s pray.
In the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
Dear God, thank you for calling us yours.
Help us to follow you more closely.
And pray that I might see the potential in my own and others' lives, so we might all grow to be saints you called us to be.
St.
Peter Chanel, pray for us.
Amen.
In the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
Amen.
Thank you so much for listening.
We’ll be back tomorrow scattering more flowers.
See ya!
