Hello everyone! Heyo! Welcome back to Scattering Flowers with Elise and Miles, a podcast where you read the Daily Gospels and the Saint of the Day.
Let’s get started! Today is Wednesday, April 22nd, and the Gospel reading is John 6, 35-40, and the scripture to reflect on is John 6, 37. All that the Father gives me will come to me, and him who comes to me I will not cast out. When people realized Jesus had left the place and gone somewhere else, they went looking for him.
They found him way over on the other side of the lake.
Jesus said to them, you shouldn’t be so concerned about things like food.
Instead, you should be seeking eternal life that I can give you. Today’s Saint of the Day is Saint Mary Elizabeth Hasselblad.
She was born 1870 and died 1957.
She is the patron saint of seekers of the true faith. Born into a large family in Sweden, even as a child Mary Elizabeth was troubled at the lack of unity among Christian churches.
One day as she walked home alone in a quiet forest, she begged the Lord to show her the truth.
In 1888, at the age of 18, she immigrated to New York City to work there as a nurse.
She cared for many people who were Catholic and became interested in their faith.
On the trip to Brussels in 1900, Mary Elizabeth witnessed a Corpus Christi Eucharist possession.
She did not want to be a part of it, but while everyone around her knelt, she heard it in her heart.
I’m the one whom you seek. Elizabeth responded to the calling.
Within two years, she became a Catholic and offered her life to God. But the people still said, give us the bread.
Give it to us every day.
Jesus replied, I am the bread of life.
Whoever comes to me will never be hungry again, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.
Some people today are still asking for some special sign that will prove that Jesus was sent from God.
But God has given us all the signs we need right here in the Bible.
All God wants is for us to believe in the one he sent. Mary Elizabeth was a seeker of truth, and this led her to the Catholic faith.
Her life shows us that goodness and virtue flow from the truth and ultimately the truth of Jesus Christ.
Mary Elizabeth, who knew that her beliefs mattered greatly. Let’s pray.
In the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit.
Dear God, help us to believe in the one that you sent, Jesus.
And help us that we all believe with one heart and live out the faith in works of loving service.
St.
Mary Elizabeth Hasselblad, pray for us.
Amen.
In the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit.
Amen.
Thank you so much for listening.
We’ll be back tomorrow scattering more flowers.
See ya!
