Hello everyone! Heyo! Welcome back to Scattering Flowers with Elise and Miles, a podcast where you read the daily gospels and the saint of the day.
Let’s get started! Let’s go! Today is Tuesday, December 23rd, and the gospel reading is Luke 1, 57-66.
And the scripture to reflect on is Luke 1, 66.
And all who heard them laid them up in their hearts, saying, What then will this child be?
For the hand of the Lord was with him.
God has a plan for all of our lives.
He created each one of us and knew about us before we were even born.
God plans for our lives that we will glorify him and enjoy him forever.
We cannot glorify him if we have not put our faith in Jesus.
Jesus came into the world as a baby.
It’s getting so close to Jesus' actual birth.
I’m getting so excited to celebrate, aren’t you?
Today’s saint of the day is St.
John of Canty.
He was born June 23, 1390 and died December 24, 1473.
He is a patron saint of Poland.
John was a scholar saint.
He was born near Canty in Poland and spent most of his life teaching in the University of Krakow.
As a young man, he competed higher studies in philosophy and then studied for priesthood.
After ordination, John began teaching in what is known as profound understanding the Catholic doctrine.
At one point, some rivals forced him out of his professorship and was assigned to a parish.
He accepted this gracefully, and although he was new to pastoral ministry, he gradually won the people’s hearts with his goodness and kindness.
After a few years, he returned to teaching.
John’s outstanding concern for the needy made him popular with the poor of Krakow, who always knew that his goods and money were of dismoisal.
By giving away most of what he owned and keeping only what he needed, John lived in a sheer and simple way of life.
Once, he was even turned away from a restaurant because his cassock was so worn.
When people turned away that John’s life would be reckoned from his health, he would always remind them that the desert fathers lived long lives despite their peasants and fasting.
John indeed lived a long life, dying at the age of 83 on Christmas Eve.
After he put our faith in Jesus, we become his followers who glorify God by sharing the message of the good news with others and live a life that pleases God.
John’s teaching often focused on sacred scripture.
The word of God in the Bible nourishes our minds and hearts that we can live as true Christians.
We too should spend time every day to read and pray with scripture and God.
Let’s pray.
In the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
Dear Jesus, help me to live out my faith every day to glorify you.
And help us that we can live a simple life and share the good news of your birth to others.
Saint John of Canty, pray for us.
Amen.
In the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
Amen.
Thank you so much for listening.
We’ll be back tomorrow scattering more flowers.
See ya!
