Hello everyone! Heyo! Welcome back to Scattering Flowers with Elise and Miles, a podcast where we read the daily gospels and the saint of the day.
Let’s get started! Today is Thursday, October 23rd, and the gospel reading is Luke 12, 49-53, and the scripture to reflect on is Luke 12, 52. For henceforth is one house, there will be five divided, three against two, and two against three. I love hanging out with my family, sometimes a little too much, but that’s because they are so important to me, and I enjoy having a relationship with them.
I really like when my dad tells me the stories of his past.
It’s so cool the fun facts of places his family came from. Today’s saint of the day is St.
John of Capistrano.
He was born 1386 and died 1456.
He is the patron saint of chaplains and judges.
John was born in Capistrano, Italy.
His father died when he was young, so he was raised by a faith-filled mother.
He then studied law and was appointed governor in 1412.
During this time, war broke out and John was sent to propose peace to the family.
John was seized and imprisoned.
While in prison, St.
Francis of Assisi appeared to John and invited him to enter the Franciscans.
After his release from prison, he was ordained in 1425 and then began traveling on missions.
John would hear confessions and was traveling and preaching all over Europe.
John was often sent on behalf of the Pope to restore the faith and preach to regions of turmoil.
After a life of tireless preaching, John died at the age of 70. This scripture definitely isn’t the most happy of ones that we’ve read.
I read it with my mom and we decided Jesus must have been a little upset at the disciples.
I laughed when we talked through it, saying, I can imagine Jesus smacking his head as he blows out a deep breath of frustration.
He was explaining that families will be separated because what is more important than your family ancestry is the family of God. After John got out of prison, he became a priest right away and started preaching all over Europe about repentance.
He went to people everywhere to know that they could come back to God after falling away from him.
Let’s pray.
In the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
Dear God, thank you for being our family and that if our family prays together, we will be in heaven forever with you.
And help me to repent so I can turn back to you when I fall away.
Saint John of Capistrano, pray for us.
Amen.
In the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
Amen.
Thank you so much for listening.
We’ll be back tomorrow scattering more flowers.
See ya!
