Hello everyone! Heyo! Welcome back to Scattering Flowers with Elise and Miles, a podcast where you read the daily Gospels and the Saint of the Day.
Let’s get started! Today is Friday, June 27th, and the Gospel reading is Luke 15, 3 through 7, and the scripture to reflect on is Luke 15, 7.
Just so I tell you, there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine religious persons who need no repentance.
Today’s readings make me think of the old hymn, Amazing Grace.
A man named John Newton wrote it after he almost died in the big storm out at sea.
He changed his life from being a mean slave trader to serving God.
In 1772, Newton wrote the words of Amazing Grace for a sermon he preached on New Year’s Day, reflecting on the grace that saved him.
The hymn was first printed in 1779.
Today’s Saint of the Day is Saint Cyril of Alexandria.
He was born in the year 368 and died June 27th, 444.
His feast day is June 27th.
He is a patron saint of unity.
In the time of Cyril, there was a bishop named Nestorius that started to preach that people should not call Mary the mother of God, but only the mother of Christ.
Saint Cyril opposed of teaching the Nestorius.
He had great depths in his knowledge and truth and clarity that Jesus is both divine and human.
The natures of Jesus are united, but only one person in the second person of the Trinity.
So we can indeed call Mary the mother of God because the person she gave birth to was God.
The Bible teaches us that we are like sheep and sometimes stray away from God.
That makes God very sad, but he never gives up on us.
He keeps searching for us to bring us back to him.
He even sent Jesus, his son, to save those who are lost.
Aren’t you glad that God doesn’t give up on us?
Even when we mess up and live sinfully, I am because I once was lost, but now I’m found.
Saint Cyril gives us hope.
He has so much passion for the truth.
He shows us that if we live our lives through the Holy Spirit, we can live for good things.
Even when we send God doesn’t need us to be perfect, but he needs us to strive to live saintly.
Let’s pray.
In the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
Dear God, we are so thankful that you came to save those who are lost.
Saint Cyril of Alexandria, pray for us that we will live out the Gospels daily and that we will always know that Mother Mary is our mother with the help of the Holy Spirit.
Amen.
In the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
Amen.
Thank you so much for listening.
We’ll be back next week scattering more flowers.
See ya!
