Hello everyone! Heyo! Welcome back to Scattering Flowers with Elise and Miles, a podcast where we read the daily Gospels and the Saint of the Day.
Let’s get started! Today is Friday, June 13th, and the Gospel reading is Matthew 5, 27-32, and the scripture to reflect on is Matthew 5, 29.
If your right eye causes you to sin, pluck it out and throw it away.
It is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body be thrown into hell.
There’s this song my mommy used to sing to us in a rocking chair when we were little kids.
It has the words that says, be careful little eyes what you see, and be careful little ears what you hear, for the Father above is looking down in love.
That’s what today’s scripture is talking about.
Jesus is telling us that it’s not what we do, but what we think and feel towards something.
Our hearts should be true and pure, and we should always try to do things with the right and just spirit.
Today’s Saint of the Day is Saint Anthony of Padua.
He was born in 1195 and died June 13th, 1231.
He is the patron saint of faith in the blessed sacrament and preachers and lost things.
Saint Anthony was a friar and a preacher who lived in the 13th century, and he was very good and able to speak about Jesus and the love of God.
He is known for a famous story preaching to the fish when people wouldn’t listen to him.
He traveled from place to place sharing the message of Jesus.
It is said that when the fish heard him preaching, they would come to the surface and listen to lots of people admire Saint Anthony because he was very kind and had the ability to bring people closer to God.
There is another story about him of one night he was in a deep prayer.
Jesus appeared to him as a child in the room filled with light and laughter.
Saint Anthony held Jesus in his arms.
We need to live as examples by using good words and love towards other people.
Because of Jesus' example, that means that we have to be careful about the things that we see and the things that we hear, just like the song that I told you about at the top.
Be careful what your eyes see and hear because the Father is looking down on us.
Even when it’s hard or dangerous, Saint Anthony of Padua was a great preacher and had lots of knowledge of the scripture.
He had an undying love and devotion for the poor and the sick.
He was quickly canonized less than a year after his death.
Let’s pray.
In the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, dear God, help us to always be careful for what we hear and see and to not have wicked thoughts towards stuff.
And help us to preach the gospel and not sin that much from Saint Anthony of Padua.
Pray for us.
Amen.
In the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit.
Amen.
Thank you so much for listening.
We’ll be back next week scattering more flowers.
See ya!
