Hello everyone! Heyo! Welcome back to Scattering Flowers with Elise and Miles, a podcast where you read the daily gospels and the saint of the day.
Let’s get started! Today is Monday, June 9th, and the gospel reading is John 19, 25-34, and the scripture to reflect on is John 19, 27.
Then he said to the disciple, Behold your mother, and from that hour the disciple took her to his own home. Just a couple of weeks ago, we celebrated Mother’s Day.
My mom always jokes and says that’s the one day she won’t do the dishes.
She doesn’t really want to do much on that day except for she likes to just relax and be with us.
Isn’t it cool to think about even Jesus honored and loved his mother?
He loved her so much that when he was on the cross suffering, he took time to show how much he cared for her by making sure that John was there to support her while he was away. Today’s saint of the day, Saint Ephraim of Syrian.
He was born in the year 306 and died June 9th, 373.
He is the patron saint of spiritual directors and hymn writers. Ephraim is called the Harp of the Holy Spirit because he wrote beautiful hymns.
He was born in modern day Turkey and was baptized and became a deacon hero, beautiful hymns, and also instructed people in their faith.
He loved to write about the Virgin Mary and wrote with deep love and personal devotion to her.
He used his great writing talent to teach and categorize people through hymns.
He died from the plague that struck in the city of 373. Jesus also gave his mother to John, which means he gave her to us.
Today, remember that there’s always someone by your side who loves you dearly.
Sometimes when you’re having a bad day, it’s easy to dwell on all the things that’s making your day feel wrong.
But I hope that today’s reading can make you remember that Mary, our mother, that Jesus gave us, is there with you always. St.
Ephraim the Syrian was called the Harp of the Holy Spirit.
He is to have said, the one who inspired him most was the Holy Virgin Mother of God giving the highest honor to her with his poetry.
We too should pray that we grow in love and devotion to her. Let’s pray.
In the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
Hail Holy Queen, Mother of Mercy, our life, our sweetness, and our hope.
To thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve.
To thee do we sigh, mourning and weeping in this valley of tears.
Turn then, most gracious, advocate thine eyes of mercy toward us.
And after this, our exile, show us the blessed fruit of thy womb.
Jesus, O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary, pray for us, Holy Mother of God.
Pray for us, St.
Ephraim of Sien.
Amen.
In the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
Amen.
Thank you so much for listening.
We’ll be back tomorrow.
Scattering more flowers.
See ya!
