Hello everyone! Heyo! Welcome back to Scattering Flowers with Elise and Miles, a podcast where you read the daily Gospels and the Saint of the Day.
Let’s get started! Today is Thursday, May 8th, and the Gospel reading is John 6, 44-51, and the scripture to reflect on is John 51.
I am the living bread which came down from heaven.
If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever, and the bread which I shall give for the life of the world is my flesh.
During Mass, after the bread and wine are consecrated into Jesus' body and blood, before we receive, we say the prayer, Lord, I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof, but only say the word, and my soul shall be healed.
We also pray during the Our Father, give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.
Jesus came down to be our daily bread.
We should take time to receive him.
Today’s Saint of the Day is Blessed Catherine of Saint Augustine.
Saint Catherine was born May 3rd, 1632 and died May 8th, 1668.
We celebrate her feast day today, May 8th.
She’s the patron saint of Canada.
From a young age, Blessed Catherine had many mythical experiences in her life of prayer and devotion to God.
When she was 16, she volunteered to go to Quebec by ship, and while on the ship, she got sick with the plague and almost died.
But by a miracle of Mary’s intercession, she got better and spent most of her short life serving others.
She died at the age of 36 and is honored as one of the six founders of the Catholic Church in Canada.
When we pray the various prayers throughout the Mass, sometimes we can do it out of habit because we are so used to doing them every week.
We are actually uniting ourselves with Jesus and the Holy Spirit.
Receiving the Eucharist is bringing us closer to eternal life.
Next time you say the prayers throughout Mass, try thinking about the words you are saying.
Blessed Catherine of Saint Augustine lived her life of prayer with serving others.
She cared a lot about people and lived her life as an example of filling her life with God.
Let’s pray in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit.
Let’s pray the Our Father.
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
Amen.
In the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit.
Amen.
Thank you so much for listening.
We’ll be back tomorrow scattering more flowers.
See ya!
