Hello everyone! Heyo! Welcome back to Scattering Flowers with Elise and Miles, a podcast where we read the daily Gospels and the Saint of the Day.
Let’s get started! Today is May 2nd and the Gospel reading is John 6, 1-15.
The scripture to reflect on is John 6, 14.
When the people saw the sign which he had done, they said, This is indeed the prophet who is to come into the world.
Think of something ordinary that you use every day, like a spoon, a pencil, or a toothbrush.
What is a way you can use that item in a way that’s different from what it’s normally used for?
The spoon can help you dig a hole, a toothbrush can comb your eyebrows, or a pencil can be used to play drums.
God used an ordinary boy and this ordinary lunch to feed 5,000 people.
God can use you and your ordinary things to do something amazing too! Today’s Saint of the Day is Saint Athanasius.
Athanasius was born in the 3rd century and died May 2nd, 373.
We celebrate his feast day today, May 2nd.
He’s the patron saint of theologians.
Saint Athanasius was Bishop of Alexandria for 45 years, of which he spent 17 years in exile, even spending 6 years hiding in the desert with a group of monks.
Saint Athanasius is called the Great by the Church because he defended Jesus against false beliefs for many years.
Did you know it is important to know that Jesus is God?
What’s one ordinary thing about you that God can use in a big way?
Like the boy’s lunch became a feast for everyone.
Even a little from us can become a lot when you share it with God.
If Saint Athanasius had not stood up for our faith, perhaps the Church would not be the same way.
It’s crazy to think about.
We should take time to see more of Jesus all around us.
Let’s pray.
In the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
Dear God, thank you that you give us all we need and even more.
Help us to be better about sharing our ordinary things so you can use them for extraordinary things.
And help us to stand up for the truth of Jesus and see Jesus in the world around us.
Saint Athanasius, pray for us.
In the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
Amen.
Thank you so much for listening.
We’ll be back next week, scattering more flowers.
See ya!
