Hello everyone! Heyo! Welcome back to Scattering Flowers with Elise and Miles, a podcast where we read the daily Gospels and the Saint of the Day.
Let’s get started! Today is Thursday, April 24th, and we’ll be reading Luke 24, 35-48.
Follow along your Bible if you have one.
Now let’s read Luke 24, 35-48. Then they told what had happened on the road, and now he was known to them in the breaking of the bread.
As they were saying this, Jesus himself stood among them and said to them, Peace to you.
But they were startled and frightened and supposed that they saw a spirit.
And he said to them, Why are you troubled and why do questionings rise in your hearts?
See my hands and my feet, that it is I myself.
Handle me and see, for a spirit has not flesh and bones, as you see that I have.
And when he had said this, he showed them his hands and his feet.
And while they still disbelieved for joy and wondered, he said to them, Have you anything here to eat?
They gave him a piece of broiled fish, and he took it and ate it before them.
Then he said to them, These are my words which I spoke to you, while I was still with you, and everything written about me in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms must be fulfilled.
Then he opened their minds to understand the scriptures.
And he said to them, Thus it is written that the Christ should suffer and on the third day rise from the dead, and that repentance and forgiveness of sins should be preached in his name to all nations, beginning from Jerusalem.
You are witnesses of these things. A couple years ago, we went to Quebec, Canada for a fun vacation.
Before we went, my brother and I had to get a passport.
We got our picture taken and sent it in and waited for a few days to get our new passports to come in the mail. A passport serves as me and my brother’s ID, since we don’t drive yet and don’t have a driver’s license.
It shows us who we are, and we aren’t a stranger to our land.
But what about Jesus?
Do you think he had a driver’s license or a passport?
I don’t think so.
But he did prove his identity and his authority in the world.
After Jesus died, he came back to life.
He came to his disciples again and even at the point that he had to prove himself.
He showed them the scars in his hands and feet. Heyo! Today’s saint is St.
Fidelis of Sigmargen.
Now, let’s read his story.
Mark Ray was born in Germany during the difficult time of religion conflict between Catholics and Protestants.
Even as a young man, he focused on prayer, the practice of virtue and holiness.
He studied philosophy and law at the University of Witzelburg and became a lawyer known as the poor man’s lawyer.
Because he took on cases for the needy, he became disillusioned with the injuries of the legal system at the time.
Leaving the law profession, Mark gave his wealth away and decided to become a priest.
He was oriented in 1612 and entered the Capuchins.
Shortly after that, taking the name Fidelis, he eventually became the superior of several monasteries and dedicated himself to caring for the poor, the sick, and the downtrodden.
He was later sent to Switzerland to preach to those who had fallen away from the Catholic Church, especially followers of the Calvin and Zingwinli.
Murdered by a band of exterminates at Suivis, he died praying for them in the spirit of forgiveness.
Fidelis was canonized in 1746 by Pope Benedict XIV. Fidelis is like the word fidelity, which means faithful.
St.
Fidelis kept true to his identity in God.
Even though people opposed him preaching the word of God, he still kept preaching.
Jesus gave the disciples an important task to spread the love of God to all around them.
He gave them the identity of Christ followers.
We should want to have that identity too, a heavenly passport or a driver’s license.
We should share the words of Jesus with other people or even just care for them and shine the light of Christ with joyful attitudes.
We should be inspired by St.
Fidelis to do everything for Jesus.
Let’s pray.
In the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
Dear God, help us to always find our identity in Jesus and to live to be your disciples.
And help us not to be ashamed to say faithful to God.
St.
Fidelis, pray for us.
In the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
Amen.
Thank you so much for listening.
We’ll be back tomorrow scattering more flowers.
See ya!
