Hello everyone, welcome back! My name is Elise Brooklyn and this is Scattering Flowers, a podcast where we scatter flowers of faith.
Today is Monday, September 30th, and we will be reading Luke 9, 46-50.
Follow along in your Bible if you have one! Now let’s read Luke 9, 46-50.
And an argument arose among them as to which of them was the greatest.
But when Jesus perceived the thought of their hearts, he took a child and put them in his side and said to them, Whoever receives this child in my name receives me, and whoever receives me receives him who sent me.
For he who is least among you all is the one who is great.
John answered, Master, we saw a man casting out demons in your name, and we forbid him because he does not follow with us.
But Jesus said to him, Do not forbid him, for he that is not against you is for you.
I might have already told you that my family and I help serve at St.
Joseph’s Soup Kitchen.
We are a part of a team with some of our other church-going friends.
The group has gotten a little bigger since we first started to volunteer.
The first time we served, my mom got to help cook the meal.
And then we would serve it the next morning.
She made two big crock pots of food.
When she got to the place to serve it, it was raining really hard, and so not many people came to be fed.
So we actually got dismissed to go home early because there were too many servers just sitting around with not much to do.
I got mad, like pouty mad.
My dad asked me why I was so upset, and I just explained that I was excited to serve and why did they choose our family for who had to go home.
After I talked it through with my dad and my mom, I realized that we still serve Jesus with our hearts because we were willing, and we got up earlier than normal on a Saturday to give our time, and my mom also gave her time to cook and deliver food.
Even if it didn’t work out how I thought it would, in today’s reading, it reminds me of an example of serving at the soup kitchen.
We should look for ways to lend a helping hand and uplift those around you.
Even if I only got to set the tables that day instead of serve the food, selflessly serving others is also serving God.
Let’s pray.
In the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit, dear God, help me let the light of Jesus shine, and help me to serve others selflessly, not selfishly.
In Jesus' name, amen.
In the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit, amen.
Thank you so much for listening.
I’ll be back tomorrow scattering more flowers.
See ya!
