Hello everyone, welcome back! My name is Elise Brooklyn and this is Scattering Flowers, a podcast where we scatter flowers of faith.
Today is Friday, September 6th and we will be reading Luke 5, 33-39.
Follow along in your Bible if you have one.
Now let’s read Luke 5, 33-39.
And they said to him, The disciples of John fast often and offer prayers, and so do the disciples of the Pharisees.
But yours eat and drink.
And Jesus said to them, Can you make wedding guests fast while the bridegroom is with them?
The days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and they will fast in those days.
He told them a parable also.
No one tears a piece from a new garment and puts it upon an old garment.
If he does, he will tear the new, and the piece from the new will not match the old.
And no one puts new wine into old wineskins.
If he does, the new wine will burst the skins, and it will be spilled, and the skins will be destroyed.
But new wine must be put into fresh wineskins, and no one after drinking old wine desires new, for he says the old is good.
This parable was a tough one for me to put into words.
I double-checked with my mom to see if it made sense.
I kind of know what it’s saying, so let me try to break it down for you too.
Jesus is telling this parable to say to the Pharisees, the new life that Christ brings will not fit into the old ways of worship.
It’s not going to be animal sacrifice anymore, because Jesus knew he was going to be the sacrifice for all time.
I think the Pharisees didn’t really understand that, because they had no room in their old wineskin hearts.
We can too be a bit like that with our attitudes, that say, I’m not going to do something new.
I am fine with the way I pray, or how I read my Bible, or how I do this or that.
Everything is good just the way I like it.
I like the way I do things.
But Jesus tells the parable about these two things to try and show us that he is good and new way of life.
Let’s pray.
In the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit, dear God, help us to change everything we need in our life, so that you fill us up with your real presence.
Thank you for your love.
In Jesus' name, amen.
In the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit, amen.
Thank you so much for listening.
I’ll be back next week, scattering more flowers.
See ya!
