Hello everyone, welcome back! My name is Elise Brooklyn and this is Scattering Flowers, a podcast where we scatter flowers of faith.
Today is Monday, September 2nd and we will be reading Luke 4, 16-30.
Follow along in your Bible if you have one.
Now let’s read Luke 4, 16-30.
And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up.
And he went to the synagogue, as it was his custom on the Sabbath day.
And he stood up to read, and there he was given to him the book of the prophet Isaiah.
He opened the book and found the place where it was written.
The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to preach the good news to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim the release to the captives, and recovering the sight of the blind, to send liberty to those who are oppressed, to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord.
And he closed the book and gave it to the attendant, and sat down.
And the eyes of all the synagogue were fixed on him.
And he began to say to them, Today the scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.
And all spoke well of him, and wondered at the gracious words which proceeded out of his mouth.
And they said, Is not this Joseph’s son?
And he said to them, Doubtless you will quote to me this proverb, Precision, heal yourself.
What we have heard you did at Capernaum, do here also in your own country.
And he said, Truly I say to you, no prophet is acceptable in his own country.
But in truth I tell you, there were many widows in Israel in the day of Elijah, when the heaven was shut up three years and six months.
When there came a great famine over the land, and Elijah was sent to none of them, but only to Zarephath in the land of Sidion, to a woman who was a widow.
And there were many lepers in Israel the time of the prophet Elijah, and none of them was cleansed but only Naaman the Syrian.
When they heard this, all the synagogue were filled with wrath, and they showed up and put him out of the city, and led him to the brow of the hill which the city was built.
They might throw him down the headlong, and passing through the midst of them, he went away.
Have you ever had a bad day, like a really bad day?
Maybe you overslept, and so you started the day rushing around to get out the door time.
Or maybe you thought everyone was picking on you, so you felt really sad and ignored.
Or maybe you got a bad report on some news you were waiting for.
All these would make your day not so great, and maybe you just wanted to throw your hands up and say, I quit.
Today we read that Jesus went to his hometown, and the day started out good.
The people were so excited that they asked him to teach in the synagogue, but once Jesus actually started teaching, the people quickly became upset with things he said.
They were so upset with him that they wanted to hurt him.
Jesus decided that he had had enough, and he walked away.
But here’s the thing, Jesus might have disappeared from the people that were mistreating him for a day, but that’s a good thing he didn’t quit preaching forever.
Let’s pray.
In the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit, dear God, thank you for Jesus who shows us how to keep living for him, even when we might be having a bad day.
In Jesus' name, Amen.
In the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit, Amen.
Hey, thanks to all of you who entered in the 100th episode, um, giveaway.
