Hello everyone, welcome back! My name is Elise Brooklyn and this is Scattering Flowers, a podcast where we scatter flowers of faith.
Today is Monday, August 19th, and we will be reading Matthew 19, 16-22.
Follow along in your Bible if you have one.
Now let’s read Matthew 19, 16-22.
And behold, one came up to him, saying, Teacher, what good deed must I do to have eternal life?
And he said to him, Why do you ask me about what is good?
One there is who is good.
If you would enter life, keep the commandments.
He said to him, Which?
And Jesus said, You shall not kill, you shall not commit adultery, you shall not steal, you shall not bear false witness on your father and mother, and you shall love your neighbor as yourself.
The young man said to him, All these I have observed.
What do I still lack?
Jesus said to him, If you would be perfect, go sell all of your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven, and come follow me.
When the young man heard this, he went away sorrowful.
He had great possessions.
A few years ago, we went to a drive-in movie.
It was a Disney sing-along.
Everyone was singing along and having a great time.
I had my can of water in the cup holder, and the man next to me took a drink from it.
I think it was an accident.
He probably thought he put it in the cup holder between us, instead of next to him.
But I then didn’t want to drink any more of my water.
I kept asking my mom for a drink of her water, and she kept saying, No, you have your own.
So I finally whispered to her what had happened.
Would you want to drink the water?
No.
Why not?
Because even though I was thirsty, I would not ever want to drink another person’s spit.
That nice refreshing water is spoiled.
Just one drop of spit from someone I didn’t know ruined the entire drink.
So one sin breaks the perfect relationship that God had with people.
People often misunderstand the point of what Jesus says.
Having money is not sin.
Loving money is a sin.
Love for money causes sin.
Let’s pray.
In the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
Dear Jesus, thank you that we can be sure that if we obey God, He will provide us with everything we need to serve and to do good works, including money and other needs.
Help us to remember to do as you want us to, so we can stay away from sin.
In Jesus' name, Amen.
In the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit, Amen.
Thank you so much for listening.
I’ll be back tomorrow, scattering more flowers.
See ya!
