Hello everyone, welcome back.
My name is Elise Brooklyn and this is Scattering Flowers, a podcast where we scatter flowers of faith.
Today is Wednesday, August 7th, and we will be reading Matthew 15, 21-28.
Follow along in your Bible if you have one.
Now let’s read Matthew 15, 21-28.
And Jesus went away from there and withdrew to the district of Tyre and Sidion.
And behold, a Canaanite woman from that region came out and cried, Have mercy on me, O Lord, son of David.
My daughter is severely possessed by a demon, but he did not answer her with a word.
And his disciples came and begged him, saying, Send her away, for she is crying after us.
He answered, I was sent only by the lost sheep of the house of Israel.
But she came and knelt before him, saying, Lord, help me.
And he answered, saying, It is not fair to take the children’s bread and throw it to the dogs.
And she said, Yes, Lord, yet even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their master’s table.
Then Jesus answered her, O woman, great is your faith.
Let it be done for you as you desire.
And her daughter was healed instantly.
Well, today was another reading I had to ask my mom for help with.
I guess I didn’t understand why Jesus didn’t want to help the lady with her daughter.
We usually see Jesus as a kind, loving, and helpful.
But this story is definitely not feeling like that to me.
When I asked my mom about it, she told me she doesn’t know why Jesus acted the way he did.
Maybe we don’t need to know.
Maybe the story is more about the woman.
She told Jesus that at least dogs still received the table scraps.
Jesus was impressed by her faith.
Not only did she keep asking without giving up.
She truly believed in him.
And she knew that he could do miracles.
So he granted what she requested and healed her daughter.
Life can sometimes be really hard.
It’s not always easy to live our lives out in faith.
Sometimes I don’t want to get up and go to Mass.
Sometimes I don’t like reading my Bible every single morning.
And sometimes I’m just plain grumpy.
My mom says this world is a broken place and we all can easily slip into sin.
All.
We all can do to continue and try to live out our faith.
And that’s enough.
God may or may not do what we want.
But we also should always be trying to strengthen our faith.
Because we don’t want to miss the moment of God doing something good.
Let’s pray.
In the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
Dear God, thank you for providing what we need every single day.
Help us to be patient, even when it seems far away.
Help us to trust in you always.
Thank you for your love.
Amen.
In Jesus' name.
Amen.
In the name of the Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit.
Amen.
